Green taxi on the Brooklyn Bridge

THE STORY: Capturing motion blur is one of the most challenging techniques in image making. For me at least it is.

I love it. I love the sense of motion in a still image.

I was in this spot months before, during a Spring twilight, the windows of lower Manhattan starry-like against the darkness of steel and glass skyscrapers. I was trying to capture yellow taxis as they passed by.

A tripod does no good here. The promenade shakes with the thunder of traffic. And you don't wanna lose your equipment to an unfortunately slip, having it obliterate in a thousand pieces on the street blow.

None of them turned out.

Nothing informs you that you have become a photo enthusiast quite like wanting desperately to make up for a failure.

As in, you got your gear home, popped the SD card into the reader, eagerly waiting to see the shot you just knew was awesome. Only to find out none of them turned out sharp.

And so you have to go back. Sometime. You have to go back and do it right.

Fortunately, late November gave me that chance. So did a lonesome green taxi accelerating eastward to Brooklyn.
